Former Attorney General Shibly Aziz PC has been elected as the new President of the Bar Association today winning the election with a majority of 482 all island votes. Addressing the gathering at the Hulftsdorp Court premises after the declaration of results, Mr. Aziz pledged to create an independent and undivided bar.
According to the final results, Mr. Aziz has obtained 1379 votes out of a total polled 2547 in the main Colombo bar with a lead of 296. In the outstations he has obtained a lead of 186 votes. His main rival was President’s Counsel Palitha Kumarasinghe.
Mr. Shibly Aziz has been in the Attorney Generals’ department for more than 30 years, and became the Second Attorney General of Sri Lanka from the Muslim community. He is the son of the late Advocate M.H.A. Aziz founder of the Ahadiya Movement in Sri Lanka, and the present President of The All Island Ahadiya Movement.
