Niyas, SLMC district organizer of Puttalam and two others will be fielded as candidates for the election according to an Ex. SLMC member of Puttalam urban council.

It is expected Mr. Yehya , the SLMC rebel provincial councilor who has joined hands with the area strongman K.A. Baiz, the Deputy Minister of Livestock Development will be contesting as a UPFA candidate.

Security Situation

White van abductions have decreased drastically in Puttalam area for the time being. And the overall security status of the district is normal at the moment.

Social Situation

Officials from the University of Wayambe will come to Puttalam and Kalpitiya areas soon on a fact finding mission in relation with the setting up of a faculty on cashew nuts and sea related studies in Puttalam town.

This visit follows a request made by Hon. Deputy Minister K.A. Baiz to the Vice Chancellor of the Wayambe University.

A new road leading to Mannar from Puttlam will be constructed parallel to the western coastal line, Minister of Highways, T. B. Ekanayake told yesterday.
