“Although I did not emerge the winner in the North I am glad that people entered the democratic process after a long break and cast their ballot for the ruling party and the opposition,” so said President Mahinda  Rajapaksa at a meeting with media heads in Colombo.

President Rajapaksa added that polling in the North and East itself was a triumph of democracy and the fact that the vote which split between the government and the opposition was a welcome feature.

“It was only nine months ago that the war was brought to an end.  The old hostilities need time to heel.  I will give whatever possible to the people in the North and East.  It is the responsibility of the media to desist from sowing seeds of separatism again,” he added.
